Regardless of how fit you are; or indeed think you are, many of us lack the most
important components of fitness and exercise: balance and co-ordination. As you
get older your balance deteriorates. Similarly, a lack of exercise causes a loss
loss of nerve sensitivity, muscle strength, and reflex speed. Staying Active helps
you keep your balance as you age.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Before you start, make sure: you have plenty of room; should you lose balance,
and that you have somebody to time each attempt and to help out should you
need any help.
1. Stand barefoot on a flat, hard surface.
2. Close your eyes.
3. Lift one leg from the floor and start timing.
4. Hold this position for as long as possible.
5. Stop timing when: your non-standing foot touches the floor;
your non-standing foot touches your standing leg;
you open your eyes; or
you have to use any other part of your body to stay balanced.
6. Repeat three times on each leg and take an average for each
